What is the Screven County Community Collaborative?

  

The Screven County Community Collaborative, Inc. is an active, caring organization whose purpose is to improve the quality of life for all citizens of Sylvania and Screven County by working to reduce every present barrier and increase positive factors within Screven County.   SCCC was originally formed in 1998, through the collaborative efforts of many of the community’s leaders.  It became a non-profit, 501 c (3) organization in 2000.  The following vision statement exemplifies the purpose of this organization:

          

The Vision of the Screven County Community Collaborative partners is that of a community where adults take responsibility for the nurturing of children, help is available for families who need it, Schools advance the efforts of students to learn how to be productive citizens, there are abundant possibilities for rewarding employment, decent affordable housing, and extensive recreation and people choose to live here because there is a better quality of life.

 

            The Mission of Screven County Community Collaborative is “Empowering, unifying and educating to create a brighter future for our community.”

 

             The Screven County Community Collaborative endeavors to operate as a countywide organization functioning to provide planning, leadership, coordination, implementation and overseeing of the following:

            1. Improve the well being of children and families in the community by increasing opportunities for at-risk children and families, and by decreasing inhibitors for all families through the methods of prevention, family education and family support

            2.  Coordinate services provided by agencies, governments, service providers, businesses, faith and civic organizations, and school systems with community and families to better meet their needs.

            3.   Contract or spawn services that will create new improved, affordable and easily accessible resources to families that will strengthen, support, and prevent destruction of or provide early intervention to, all families within Screven County.

 

            The overall goals of the Screven County Community Collaborative are to address teen pregnancy, increase high school graduation and to have parents take an active role in their children’s lives.  Related issues being addressed by this organization and its programs, activities and services include:     

  • Reduce Teen pregnancy

  • Provide training for improving parenting skills and job skills

  • Increase graduation rates

            The Screven County Collaborative is funded from both private and public sectors.  We also solicit contributions from businesses, individuals, other non-profits and foundations.  The funding and in-kind support we receive are considered a solemn trust by the people giving these gifts and a challenge to be good stewards and put these funds to the best use we can for the benefit and service of our children, youth and families.

 

            The Screven County Community Collaborative partners with the following agencies, groups and individuals to implement the purpose and mission of the Collaborative.  These individuals are committed to making a difference in Screven County: Screven County Board of Education, Screven County Department of Family and Children Services, Screven County Department of Juvenile Justice, Screven County Health Department, Screven County Commission, United Way of Screven County, Screven County Cooperative Extension Service-Family and Consumer Services, Screven County Chamber of Commerce, private businesses, private individuals, Ogeechee Technical College, Ogeechee Behavioral Services MH/MR/SA and Sylvania City Council.

 

            Our state and national partners and affiliates to this work include: Communities in Schools, The Family Connection, United Way of Screven County, Children and you Coordinating Council and the East Georgia Consortium.
